Clarence Heber (Sarge) Sargent
Rock Springs – Clarence Heber “Sarge” Sargent, 92 died June 5, 2005 at Sage View Care Center in Rock Springs after a short illness.
Clarence was born April 22, 1913 in Hoytsville, Utah the son of Joseph Andrew and Besty Bell Sargent. He attended school in Coalville, Utah and graduated from North Summit High School with the class of 1932. He worked in his fathers blacksmith shop repairing wagon wheels as a child and continued to build his entire life and at the age of seventeen he worked on the Echo Dam. He attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah. On June 17, 1950 he married Vivian Doan Sargent in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
. Clarence started working for Mountain Fuel Supply Company before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Clarence was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army Engineers Corps. His service during the war was primarily in Africa and Itally and he supervised the building of airfields. He finished his duty in the Army as a company commander with the rank of a Captain.
Following WWII Clarence resumed his career with Mountain Fuel Supply Company for thirty-four years until his retirement on July 1, 1975. He held the positions of roustabout, patrol operator, utilityman, assistant foreman, superintendent of communication and roads, district transmission superintendant, and supervisor of all pipelines.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving as Deacon Quorum Advisor, Clerk, Bishop and High Council Member.
He was also a member of the Kiwanis.
His interests included drawing, painting, sculpturing, wood and metal working, and remodeling houses. He also took some classes at Western Wyoming Community College. He built a boat and was creative with wood.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Sargent of Rock Springs; one son, Bill Sargent of Bellingham, Washington; five daughters, Bonnie Baker and husband Joel of Green River, Gerri Jelaco of Salt Lake City, Utah, Clareen Christensen and husband Keith of Modesto, California, Sybil Smith and husband Cory of Salem, Oregon, and Jill Laws and husband Hart of Salem, Oregon; one brother, Ralph Sargent of Coalville, Utah, two sisters, Marie Rees of Price, Utah, and Glenna Hunt and husband Vernal of Ogden, Utah; seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Newell Sargent, George Sargent, and Kenneth Sargent, and one sister, Bell Calderwood.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005 at the Rock Springs LDS Stake Center, 2055 Edgar Street. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005 at Fox Funeral Home, 2800 Commercial Way, Rock Springs and one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment and military honors will take place at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
