Hays Winfred King
Green River - Hays Winfred King, 91, of Green River, died Monday, April 4, 2011 at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County after a short illness.
He was born November 15, 1919 in Clarksville, Kansas the son of Winfred Raymond and Ethel Hayes King.
He attended schools in Johnson County, Arkansas and graduated from Clarksville High School with the class of 1936.
He married Willeen Koontz in Hartsman, Arkansas in 1940. They were later divorced.
He was employed for FMC/Stauffer 36 years retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the Eagles and Masons in Green River.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
His interests were flying, gambling, carpentry, traveling, skiing, and rock hounding.
He was the last surviving member the first five man crew into the FMC Trona mine (Zolly Morrison, Tom Morrison, MP Bishop, Scotty Patterson). He was hired by Ward Doway the day Westvaco took the mine over from the shaft sub contractor. In 1960 he sunk #2 shaft for Winston Brothers. He was a supervisor for 15 years at Stauffer Chemical. He worked for UP Coal and a coal mine in Arkansas for $7.00 and $8.50 per day. Prior to his employment at FMC, he worked for Ernie Weed doing carpentry in Green River.
He bought a lot at 440 S 5th E in Green River for $50 from John Jackabchi and built his home which still stands today (old UP dump site).
Survivors include stepson Allen Nelson of Washington; daughters, Peggy Louise Hamilton of Leven Fife, Scotland, Glenda Paulette Banks and husband Ian of Elko, Nevada; brother Bruce Edward King of Green River; grandchildren, Adam Wilson, John Wilson, Calvin Banks and Robin Banks; great-grandchildren Jeorgia, Jacklin, Jennifer, Ely, Ruby, Richard, Glenda, Annie, Katrina, Destiny, Grady and David Banks, Danny Lamb, A.J. Wilson, Mariah Wilson, K. La Rommech, Baily Smith, Ashley Smith, Amber Wilson, Shane Wilson, Brian Wilson; great-great-grandchildren, John Robertson, Quincy Robertson, Cayden Rommech, Marissa Rommech, Quinton Rommech, Tristan Smith, Hunter Smith, Aarika Smith, and Tayvin Smith; 35 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Willeen King Nelson, longtime companion Marge Rallis, son Dennis King, brothers John King, James King, Paul King, sisters Louise Sparks, Euna Sparks, Hazel Roze, Ruth Morrow, grandsons Willy Banks and Michael Duane Wilson, son-in-law George Banks, and nephew Mike King.
Cremation has taken place at Fox Funeral Home, Rock Springs.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at the Eagles Lodge, 88 N 2nd St., Green River.
