Rock Springs – John J. Carney, 57, of Rock Springs died Sunday, January 8, 2006 at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County, Rock Springs. John was born October 23, 1948 in Waltham, Massachusetts the son of John Joseph and Ruth B. Milligan Carney. He attended schools in Waltham, Massachusetts and graduated from Waltham High School with the class of 1966. On October 20, 1978 he married Sonja A. Rochatka in Burlington, Massachusetts. John was a career veteran of the U.S. Army Special Forces serving as a Green Beret until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of the Catholic Church. His interests included guns,, motorcycles, horticulture, pets and reading. Survivors include his wife Sonja Carney of Rock Springs; two sons, Jason Liam Carney and wife Samantha of Rock Springs, and Fredrick Stephen Carney, U.S. Army, Afghanistan; one daughter, Natalia Alexandria Carney of Rock Springs; four brothers, Stephen Carney and wife Joyce of Shalamar, Florida, William Carney and wife Linda of Westford, Massachusetts, Timothy Carney and Francis Carney, both of Weare, New Hampshire; one sister, Barbara Ryan of Baltimore, Maryland; two grandchildren, Chase Carney and Greenley Carney of Rock Springs; several cousins; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth Carney; infant daughter, Natalie Jean, and sister Dorothy Handy. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, A St. and Broadway, Rock Springs. Rev. Carl A. Beavers will officiate. Military honors will follow by the American Legion Archie Hay Post 24. Friends may call 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m. at Fox Funeral Home, 2800 Commercial Way, Rock Springs where a holy rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Private interment services will be held.
