Rock Springs, Wyoming
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Pennie Jean Byrd, 76, cherished wife, mother and grandmother. She passed away Thursday, October 22nd, 2026 at University of Utah Hospital surrounded by family.
Pennie was born November 4th, 1949 to Bruce and Evelyn King (Price) in Rock Springs,
Wyoming. One of eight siblings she had a wonderful childhood filled with chaos and love.
Pennie spent all of her life in Green River. She graduated from Green River High School with the class of 1968. One month later, she married Larry C. Byrd on June 21st 1968.
They would go on to have 4 children; Steve Byrd and wife Tyna, Darrin Byrd and wife Mindy, Wendy Miller and Misty Wright and husband Eric.
Pennie spent many years as a stay at home mom. Later, she took a temporary position as the cake decorator for Smith's, which turned into a 28 year career. She retired in August 2013. She made all of her kids' wedding cakes and her grandkids always had the very best birthday cakes. Whatever they asked for, she would make it.
In her free time, she enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, old westerns, games, coloring and family barbeques. She liked shopping, especially at dollar stores and she loved chocolate shakes. She found great joy in spoiling her grandkids, her dogs and granddogs. Coffee at her parents house with her mom, sisters, aunts, and anyone else who happened to be there was her favorite way to spend an afternoon.
Pennie is survived by her husband, four children, fourteen grandchildren; James Byrd, Chris Byrd, Tracy Thorburn, Vernon Thorburn, Jalen Byrd, Hannah Hamilton (Clay), Hunter Byrd (Ashlyn), Gage Perrine (Emily), Kyer Miller, Bracken Miller, Tayen Miller, Tasyn Miller, Spencer Wright and Cooper Wright. She is survived by one great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Byrd and one great-grandson Orion Thorburn. She is also survived by one brother Jeff King and three sisters, Cindy Wood, Lorriane Sisneros and Becky Palmer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Mike King, sisters Kathy Miller and Bonnie Pulley and one grandson James Darian Byrd.
Pennie will be remembered for her warmth, selflessness, easy going way, her famous Christmas morning breakfasts, and profound love for her family. Her kindness and strength will never be forgotten. Though we mourn her passing, her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind and in the countless memories we have with her.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00, Friday October 30th, 2026 at Hilltop Baptist Church, 405 Faith Dr., Green River Wyoming. Graveside services and interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery immediately following the service.
